How much tile do you need for a kitchen backsplash?

Measuring a backsplash's irregular area

A backsplash area is rarely a simple rectangle since it's broken up by windows, outlets, and the gap where upper cabinets meet the counter, so the most accurate approach is measuring the total linear footage of counter edge and multiplying by your backsplash height, then subtracting large cutouts like a window if it's substantial. This calculator takes those measurements, in feet or metres, and converts them into square footage along with an estimated tile cost based on your tile's price per square foot.

Standard backsplash height runs from the counter to the bottom of the upper cabinets, often around 18 inches (about 45 centimetres), but a full-height backsplash that runs to the ceiling or a window sill will need a different height entered for an accurate area.

Tile size and pattern affect both material and labor

Small mosaic tiles, often sold pre-mounted on mesh sheets, are quoted differently than large-format subway tile or natural stone slabs, and both the per-square-foot material cost and the labor time to set them vary accordingly, since a mosaic sheet install generally goes faster per square foot than individually set, small accent tiles. A herringbone or other patterned layout typically takes longer to install than a straightforward running bond and often increases waste because of angled cuts.

If your tile is priced per sheet rather than per square foot, check the coverage of a single sheet and use the custom amount option to enter a price that matches how your supplier actually sells it.

Outlets, waste, and accent details

Electrical outlets along a backsplash need to be cut around individually, which adds labor time and increases waste since cut tile pieces around outlets usually can't be reused elsewhere. A waste allowance of 10 to 15 percent is typical for a backsplash with a simple layout, while a kitchen with many outlets, a window, or a decorative accent strip may need closer to 20 percent.

Decorative accent tiles or a contrasting trim piece around the backsplash edge are often priced per linear foot separately from the field tile, so budget for them individually if your design includes one.

Pairing with the rest of a kitchen update

A backsplash is often one of the smaller line items in a larger kitchen remodel, so use our kitchen remodel cost calculator and countertop cost calculator alongside this one if the backsplash is part of a bigger project. Grout and thinset for the backsplash are calculated separately. Our grout and thinset calculator can help size those materials once you know your tile area and joint width.

How it's calculated

We calculate backsplash area from length times height, add a waste allowance for cuts around outlets and corners, then divide by one tile's face area to get the tile count. Material cost uses price per square foot or m² on the area including waste.

Worked example

A 20 ft long, 1.5 ft tall backsplash (30 sq ft) with 4x2 in subway tile and 10% waste: about 33 sq ft of tile needed, roughly 1,425 small tiles, around $330 in material.

Frequently asked questions

+How much extra tile should I buy for a backsplash?

10% covers a typical layout with outlets and a few corners; order 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or many cutouts.

+Do backsplash tiles usually come on mesh sheets?

Small mosaic tiles often come pre-mounted on 12x12 in mesh sheets, which simplifies this calculation since you buy by the sheet rather than loose tile.

+How high should a kitchen backsplash go?

A common standard is 18 inches from the countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets, though full-height backsplashes behind a range are popular too.

+Do I need special tile for behind a stove?

Use a heat-rated tile and grout behind a range, and consider extending the backsplash higher there for easier cleaning.

+Can I enter my own tile price?

Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under tile price and enter the price per square foot or m² you found.
