What does a kitchen remodel really cost?

Why kitchen budgets are so hard to pin down

The kitchen is the most expensive room in the house to renovate, square foot for square foot. It packs cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, electrical circuits, ventilation, lighting, flooring and appliances into a small space, and every one of those trades has its own price range. Two kitchens of exactly the same size can differ by a factor of five in cost, simply because one keeps the layout and uses stock cabinets while the other moves the sink, adds an island and installs custom joinery.

That is why this calculator starts with floor area and a finish level rather than a single national average. Area tells you how much material you need; the finish level captures the choices that actually drive the price. If you already have a quote or a target rate, choose “Custom amount” and enter your own cost per square foot or square metre.

Where the money goes

In a typical mid-range remodel, cabinets and hardware take the largest share — often 30 to 35 percent of the total. Labor and installation follow at around 20 percent, then appliances, countertops, and finally flooring, lighting, plumbing fixtures and paint. The breakdown in your results uses these common splits so you can see at a glance which decisions matter most. Saving ten percent on cabinets moves the total far more than shopping around for a cheaper faucet.

Hidden costs deserve their own line. Opening walls in older homes can reveal outdated wiring, rotten subfloor or plumbing that no longer meets code. Permits, a dumpster, temporary kitchen setup and eating out during the works all add up. Plan a contingency of 10 to 20 percent on top of the estimate; our renovation budget calculator helps you build that in.

Budget, mid-range or high-end?

A budget refresh usually means painting or refacing existing cabinets, new laminate or butcher-block counters, a new sink and faucet, and updated lighting, without moving anything. A mid-range remodel replaces cabinets with semi-custom units, adds quartz or granite counters and new appliances, and may include a tile backsplash and new flooring. High-end projects bring custom cabinetry, premium stone, professional-grade appliances and often a changed layout with relocated plumbing and gas lines.

Be honest about which group your plans fall into. Many homeowners select “mid-range” in a calculator but then add an island, pendant lights and a pot filler during design, quietly drifting into high-end pricing.

How to keep your kitchen remodel on budget

Keep the footprint. Leaving the sink, dishwasher and range where they are avoids the biggest plumbing and electrical costs. Order cabinets early, because lead times of eight to twelve weeks are common and delays push up labor costs. Collect at least three itemised quotes and compare them line by line with our contractor quote comparison calculator. Finally, decide on every finish before work starts; changes during construction are the single most common cause of budget overruns.

Use the estimate here as a starting point for conversations with contractors, not as a final price. Local labor rates, material availability and the condition of your home will always shift the number, so verify important figures with a qualified professional.

How it's calculated

We multiply your kitchen's floor area by a typical all-in cost per square foot (or square meter) for the chosen finish level, then adjust for local labor costs. The breakdown uses common industry splits for where kitchen budgets go.

Worked example

A 150 sq ft (14 m²) mid-range kitchen in an average-cost area: 150 × $200 × 1.0 = $30,000, with roughly $9,000 going to cabinets and $7,500 to labor.

Frequently asked questions

+How much does an average kitchen remodel cost?

Most mid-range kitchen remodels in the US land between $25,000 and $45,000. Small refreshes can be under $15,000; high-end remodels often exceed $60,000.

+What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

Cabinets usually take the largest share, around 25–35% of the total budget.

+How can I lower my kitchen remodel cost?

Keep the plumbing and appliances in the same place, reface instead of replace cabinets, and do demolition or painting yourself.

+Should I add a contingency?

Yes. Set aside 10–20% for surprises such as rot, wiring upgrades or price increases.

+Does this calculator work outside the US?

Yes as a rough guide. Switch to metric, treat the figures as being in your local currency and use the cost-of-living setting to adjust.

+Can I enter my own cost per square foot?

Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under finish level and type the figure your contractor quoted, or the one you researched for your area.
