How many roofing squares and shingle bundles do you need?
Why roofers measure in squares
Roofing is priced and ordered in squares, where one square equals 100 square feet, roughly 9.3 square metres. This calculator starts from your roof's footprint and applies a pitch multiplier, because a steep roof has significantly more surface area than the flat building footprint underneath it. A simple gable roof at a 6:12 pitch has noticeably more surface area than the same house with a 3:12 pitch, even though the floor plan below is identical.
Enter your building dimensions and the roof pitch, and the calculator works out the total squares you need to cover, then converts that into bundles of shingles and rolls of underlayment so you are ordering real, purchasable quantities rather than an abstract area.
Bundles, underlayment and waste
Standard asphalt shingles are typically packaged three bundles to a square, though some heavier architectural shingles use four. Underlayment usually comes in rolls that cover around 4 squares each, and you will also need starter strip along the eaves and ridge cap shingles along every hip and ridge line. None of these minor components are large individually, but skipping them in your estimate leaves you short on delivery day.
Roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, skylights or chimneys need extra material for cutting and flashing, so professional estimators typically add 10 to 15 percent waste on top of the calculated squares, more on complex or cut-up roofs and less on a simple rectangular gable.
What drives the cost beyond materials
Labor often costs as much as or more than the shingles themselves, and it scales with pitch, height and roof complexity rather than just area. A steep or multi-storey roof requires more safety equipment and slower, more careful work, which shows up directly in the quote. Tear-off of old roofing, disposal, and any plywood sheathing replacement found underneath are common add-ons once the old shingles come off.
If you already have a material price per square or bundle, choose "Custom amount" in the calculator and enter your own figure rather than relying on the regional defaults; shingle prices vary widely by brand and by how far you are from a supplier.
Comparing quotes and planning the budget
Use our contractor quote comparison calculator once you have two or three roofing quotes in hand, so you are comparing the same scope of tear-off, underlayment, flashing and disposal rather than just the bottom-line number. Roof replacement is rarely a project to defer repeatedly, since a failing roof can damage insulation, framing and interior finishes if it is left too long.
Pitch, local wind and snow load requirements, and material choice all affect both the quantities and the fastening pattern required, so have a licensed roofer confirm the final specification before you order materials.
How it's calculated
Roof area = footprint × a pitch multiplier (a steeper roof has more surface). One roofing square is 100 sq ft (about 9.3 m²). We add your waste allowance, count 3 shingle bundles per square, and multiply by an installed cost per square or m², adjusted for your area.
Worked example
An 1,800 sq ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch: 1,800 × 1.12 = 2,016 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 22.2 squares, 67 bundles, and about 22.2 × $550 ≈ $12,200 for architectural shingles.
Frequently asked questions
+What is a roofing square?
A square is 100 sq ft (about 9.3 m²) of roof surface. Roofers price and order materials by the square.
+How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Most asphalt shingles come 3 bundles per square. Some heavy designer shingles need 4 or 5; check the wrapper.
+Why does pitch matter?
A steeper roof has more surface area than its footprint, and it is slower and riskier to work on, which raises labor cost.
+Does the estimate include tear-off?
The presets assume a typical replacement including removal of one layer. Extra layers, rotten decking or complex valleys add cost.
+Can I use a quote I already have?
Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under installed cost and enter your price per square or per m².
