How to calculate flooring for any room

Area, waste and full boxes

Flooring is sold by the box, and each box covers a fixed area printed on the label. To know how many boxes to buy, you need three numbers: the room area, a waste factor and the coverage per box. This calculator multiplies length by width, adds your chosen waste allowance, and rounds up to whole boxes, because stores rarely sell partial boxes. It then multiplies by the price of your chosen flooring type to estimate material cost.

For irregular rooms, divide the space into rectangles, calculate each one and add them up. Include closets and the area under doors if the floor runs through them.

How much waste to allow

For laminate or vinyl plank laid parallel to the longest wall, 5 to 10 percent waste is typical. Diagonal installations, herringbone patterns and rooms with many corners, bay windows or stairs need 10 to 15 percent or more. Solid hardwood can have more natural defects, so many installers add an extra few percent to allow for sorting out unsuitable boards.

Extra boxes are also insurance. Keep one unopened box after installation; if a board is damaged later, you will have a matching replacement from the same production run.

Comparing flooring types

Laminate is affordable, scratch-resistant and quick to install with click joints, but most products are not suitable for wet areas. Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof, warm underfoot and a popular choice for kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Engineered hardwood has a real wood surface on a stable core, so it handles humidity changes better than solid wood. Solid hardwood is the most expensive but can be sanded and refinished many times over its long life. Tile is covered by our separate tile calculator.

Use the flooring type dropdown to compare typical prices, or choose “Custom amount” to enter the exact price per square foot or square metre from your supplier.

Don’t forget the extras

Underlayment, vapour barrier, transition strips, new baseboards or quarter-round, adhesive and moisture testing are often left out of first budgets. Removing old flooring and levelling the subfloor can add significant labor. Let the new flooring acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before installation, as most manufacturers require, and leave an expansion gap at every wall for floating floors.

The numbers here are estimates for planning. Check box coverage, installation requirements and warranty conditions with the manufacturer of the product you choose.

How it's calculated

Room area × (1 + waste factor), rounded up to whole boxes. Cost = boxes × coverage per box × price per unit of area.

Worked example

A 14 × 12 ft room = 168 sq ft (15.6 m²). With 10% waste ≈ 185 sq ft → 10 boxes of 20 sq ft at $3.50 = $700.

Frequently asked questions

+How much extra flooring should I buy?

Around 10% for most rooms, 15% for diagonal layouts or awkward shapes.

+How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply square feet by 0.0929. The calculator shows both, and you can switch units at the top.

+Do I need underlayment?

Most laminate and some vinyl floors need it. Buy the same square footage as the flooring.

+Should I include closets?

Yes, measure closets separately and add them to the total.
