Estimating drywall sheets, screws and mud

From wall area to sheet count

Drywall (also called plasterboard or gypsum board) comes in standard sheets — usually 4×8 or 4×12 feet in North America and 1.2×2.4 or 1.2×3 metres elsewhere. To estimate how many you need, the calculator adds up the wall area from the room perimeter and height, optionally includes the ceiling, adds about 10 percent for cuts and divides by the sheet size. The result is rounded up to whole sheets.

Openings such as doors and windows are not subtracted by default, because the offcuts are rarely reusable and the extra margin covers damaged corners. For a room with very large openings you can reduce the count slightly.

Choosing sheet size and type

Longer sheets mean fewer joints, and fewer joints mean less taping and sanding. Twelve-foot or three-metre sheets are ideal for long walls and ceilings, but they are heavy and hard to carry through narrow stairways. Standard half-inch (12.5 mm) board suits most walls; 5/8-inch fire-rated board is required in some locations such as garage walls adjoining living space. Moisture-resistant board belongs in bathrooms and laundry rooms, though tiled showers need cement board or a proper waterproofing system.

The sheet price dropdown estimates material cost for standard, mid-grade and specialty boards. Choose “Custom amount” to enter the exact price per sheet from your local supplier.

Screws, tape and joint compound

Alongside the sheets, the results estimate screws, joint tape and joint compound using common rules of thumb. Plan roughly 32 screws per standard sheet on walls, more on ceilings. Joint compound is used in three coats: a bedding coat with tape, a filling coat and a thin finishing coat, each wider than the last. Corner bead protects outside corners and gives crisp lines.

Tips for a smooth finish

Hang ceilings first, then walls, with the top sheet tight to the ceiling. Stagger the joints so they do not line up across rows, and keep seams away from the corners of doors and windows, where cracks are most likely. Drive screws just below the paper surface without tearing it. Between coats, let compound dry fully and sand lightly with a fine sanding sponge, wearing a dust mask.

Before closing walls, photograph the framing, pipes and wiring so you know where everything is later. Check local codes for fire-rated and moisture-resistant requirements. These figures are estimates; confirm quantities with your supplier.

How it's calculated

We add up wall area (and ceiling if selected), add 10% for cuts and divide by sheet size. Screws, mud and tape use common rule-of-thumb ratios.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls and ceiling: 352 + 120 = 472 sq ft (44 m²). ×1.1 = 519 ÷ 32 = 17 sheets of 4×8.

Frequently asked questions

+Should I subtract doors and windows?

Usually not. The offcuts are rarely reusable, so the extra acts as your waste allowance.

+Which thickness should I use?

1/2 in (12.5 mm) for most walls, 5/8 in (15 mm) for ceilings and fire-rated walls.

+Are larger sheets better?

They mean fewer seams but are heavy. Great for long walls if you have help.

+What drywall is used in bathrooms?

Moisture-resistant board, or cement board behind tile in wet areas.

+Can I enter my own sheet price?

Yes — choose "Custom amount…" in the sheet price list and type the price your store charges.
