How much does new gutter installation cost?

Linear footage and material set the base price

Gutter cost is calculated primarily by linear footage around the roofline, in feet or metres, multiplied by a rate that depends on material. Aluminum is the most common and generally the most affordable choice, vinyl costs less but is more prone to cracking in cold climates, and copper or steel sit at the high end, prized for durability and appearance. This calculator multiplies your home's total gutter run by the rate for your chosen material, and you can switch to a custom amount if a contractor has already quoted you directly.

Seamless aluminum gutters, formed on site from a coil to match your exact roofline, typically cost somewhat more than sectional gutters but have fewer joints where leaks can develop over time.

Downspouts, guards and extras

Downspouts are usually priced separately by the linear foot, and most homes need several of them spaced around the roofline to handle water volume without overflowing, so don't forget to include them in your total. Gutter guards, which help keep leaves and debris out, add a further cost per linear foot and vary widely in price depending on the style, from simple mesh screens to solid surface covers.

Extra fittings like end caps, corner pieces and hangers are typically included in an installer's linear-foot price, but it's worth confirming this is the case before comparing quotes from different contractors.

Roof shape and accessibility affect labor

A simple rectangular roofline with a single story is the most straightforward and least expensive to fit with gutters, while a roof with many valleys, dormers, or a steep pitch adds labor time and sometimes requires additional safety equipment, which shows up as a higher price per linear foot. Two-story and taller homes also generally cost more to gutter than single-story homes because of the added height and equipment needed.

If your old gutters need to be removed and disposed of, that is typically a separate line item from new installation, so ask whether it's included in any quote you receive.

Thinking beyond installation

Gutters only work well when they direct water away from the foundation, so budget for downspout extensions or a drainage solution if your yard doesn't already slope water away from the house. Our roofing cost calculator can help you estimate gutter work alongside a larger roof replacement project, since many homeowners tackle both at the same time to avoid paying for access equipment twice.

Routine cleaning, typically once or twice a year depending on nearby trees, is an ongoing cost worth factoring in separately from the installation estimate this calculator provides.

How it's calculated

We multiply total gutter length by an installed cost per linear foot or meter for your chosen material, add a per-downspout allowance, and add gutter guard cost per foot if selected, all adjusted for your region.

Worked example

150 ft of seamless aluminum gutters with 4 downspouts, no guards, average region: 150 × $8 = $1,200 gutters plus 4 × $75 = $300 downspouts, about $1,500 total.

Frequently asked questions

+Seamless vs sectional gutters: which is better?

Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on-site in one continuous piece, which means fewer leak-prone seams than sectional gutters.

+How many downspouts do I need?

A common rule is one downspout per 35-40 feet of gutter run, more in high-rainfall climates.

+Are gutter guards worth the extra cost?

They reduce clogging and cleaning frequency, which can be worthwhile under heavy tree cover, though they still need occasional maintenance.

+How often should gutters be replaced?

Aluminum gutters typically last 20+ years; replace sooner if you see rust, separating seams, or sagging from the fascia.

+Can I enter my own material price?

Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under gutter material and enter your quoted installed price per foot or meter.
