How much does hardwood flooring cost to install?
Species and plank width drive the material price
Hardwood flooring cost starts with square footage, but the real spread comes from species. Domestic options like oak and maple sit at the affordable end, while walnut, hickory in wide planks, or exotic species such as Brazilian cherry push the per-square-foot rate much higher. This calculator multiplies your room's area, in square feet or square metres, by a rate tied to the wood grade and plank width you choose, since wider planks generally cost more per square foot than narrow strip flooring.
Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood also price differently. Engineered flooring uses a thinner hardwood veneer over a plywood core, which usually costs less than solid wood of the same species while still being refinishable a limited number of times.
Installation method changes the labor line
Nail-down installation over a wood subfloor, glue-down installation over concrete, and floating engineered floors each carry different labor rates, and glue-down work over concrete sometimes requires a moisture test and a leveling compound before installation can begin. Removing old flooring, repairing a subfloor, and hauling away debris are commonly quoted as separate line items rather than folded into the per-square-foot rate, so ask your contractor whether these are included.
Sanding and finishing an unfinished floor on site adds its own labor cost on top of the material and installation price, while prefinished planks skip that step but typically cost more per square foot up front.
Waste and transitions add up
Plan on a waste allowance of roughly 10 percent for a straightforward rectangular room, and closer to 15 percent for rooms with lots of closets, angles, or a diagonal installation pattern, since every cut end becomes scrap. Transition strips between rooms, stair nosing, and quarter-round or shoe molding along the baseboards are small individual costs that are easy to forget when budgeting from a single area-based number.
If you already have a supplier or installer quote, switch to the custom amount option and enter your actual price per square foot so the total reflects your real numbers rather than a general estimate.
Comparing against other flooring options
Hardwood generally costs more up front than vinyl plank or laminate flooring but tends to last longer and can usually be refinished rather than replaced, which changes the long-run comparison. Use our flooring cost calculator and vinyl plank flooring calculator alongside this one if you are weighing hardwood against lower-cost alternatives for the same room.
Because wood floors need to acclimate to the room's humidity for several days before installation, build that time into your project schedule rather than assuming installation can start the day materials arrive.
How it's calculated
We add a waste allowance to your floor area to get the flooring to purchase, multiply by the price per square foot or m² for your chosen tier, then add professional installation labor (if selected) adjusted for your region.
Worked example
A 400 sq ft room with mid-range solid oak and professional install, 10% waste, average region: 440 sq ft × $9 = $3,960 material, plus 400 × $5 = $2,000 labor, for about $5,960 total.
Frequently asked questions
+Solid vs engineered hardwood: which costs less?
Engineered hardwood is usually cheaper and more stable over concrete or radiant heat, while solid hardwood can be refinished more times over its life.
+How much waste should I allow?
Plan on 10% for straight layouts and standard rooms, and 15% for diagonal patterns, herringbone or rooms with many angles.
+Does refinishing existing floors cost less than new flooring?
Yes, refinishing existing solid hardwood is typically far cheaper than removing and replacing it, often a few dollars per square foot.
+Can I install hardwood myself to save money?
Nail-down installation is DIY-able with a rented flooring nailer, but glue-down and tricky subfloors are best left to pros.
+Can I enter my own material price?
Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under wood & finish tier and enter your quoted price per square foot or m².
