How much do new interior doors cost?

Door count and type set the base cost

Interior door pricing is most easily calculated per door rather than by area, since each door is close to a standard size while the type and material of the door vary widely. This calculator multiplies the number of doors you need by a rate tied to your chosen door type, from a basic hollow-core slab to a solid-core panel door to a premium or custom style, and you can switch to a custom amount if a supplier or contractor has quoted you directly.

Hollow-core doors are the most affordable and common choice for closets and secondary rooms, while solid-core doors cost more but offer better sound dampening and a more substantial feel, which is why they're often chosen for bedrooms and home offices.

Pre-hung versus slab, and hardware

A pre-hung door, which comes already mounted in its frame with hinges attached, costs more than a bare slab door but is significantly easier and faster to install, especially when the existing frame is out of square or being replaced anyway. A slab door, used to replace just the door itself within an existing frame, is cheaper but only works well if the existing frame is in good, square condition.

Doorknobs, hinges, and other hardware are frequently sold separately from the door itself, and upgrading to a premium finish across every door in a house can add a meaningful amount to the overall project cost, so price hardware as its own line item.

Installation labor scales with door count and complexity

Installation labor is typically quoted per door and includes hanging the door, installing hardware, and adjusting it to close and latch properly, with pre-hung doors generally taking less time than converting an old frame or correcting an out-of-square opening. Painting or staining doors, if not pre-finished, is usually a separate cost from installation and should be added if your doors arrive unfinished.

Replacing a door's trim or casing at the same time, which is common when upgrading to a different door style or width, adds material and labor cost beyond the door itself.

Whole-house projects versus single replacements

Replacing every interior door in a house at once often secures a better per-door rate from a contractor than doing them one at a time over several years, since setup and travel costs are shared across more doors in a single visit. Our interior paint cost calculator can help you budget finishing costs if your new doors need painting as part of the same project.

How it's calculated

Number of doors × price per door for the chosen style, plus hardware cost per door, plus a flat installation labor rate per door, all adjusted by your regional factor.

Worked example

8 solid-core panel doors with mid-range lever hardware in an average-cost area: 8 × $180 + 8 × $35 + 8 × $75 = $2,320.

Frequently asked questions

+Should I buy pre-hung doors or slabs only?

Pre-hung doors include the frame and hinges, which simplifies installation and is usually worth the extra cost unless your existing frames are in good shape.

+How much does it cost to replace just the hardware?

Swapping knobs or levers alone typically runs $15-80 per door for hardware plus a small amount of labor if you hire it out.

+Do interior doors need a permit?

No, standard interior door replacement generally does not require a permit, unlike exterior doors or structural openings.

+Can I mix door styles in one house?

It's best to keep one consistent style and finish throughout main living areas for resale value, though closets and utility rooms can differ.

+Can I enter my own price per door?

Yes. Choose "Custom amount" under door style or hardware grade and enter your supplier's quoted price.
