How much does window replacement cost per window?

Frame material sets the baseline price

Window replacement cost is usually quoted per window, and the frame material is the single biggest factor in that price. Vinyl windows are the most affordable option and perform well for most homes, with low maintenance and decent insulation. Wood-framed windows cost more and need periodic painting or sealing, but many homeowners choose them for their appearance, especially in older or heritage-style houses. Fiberglass sits between the two on price in many markets and offers strong durability and dimensional stability in extreme temperature swings.

This calculator multiplies the number of windows you need by a cost per window for your chosen frame type, giving you a project total you can compare against written quotes from installers.

Installation often costs as much as the window

Buying the window itself is only part of the bill. Installation labor, removal and disposal of the old window, and any repair to surrounding trim, siding or interior drywall can add up to a similar amount to the window itself, particularly on older homes where openings are not standard sizes. A full-frame replacement, which removes the old frame down to the rough opening, costs more than a pocket replacement that fits a new window inside the existing frame, but is often necessary when the old frame has rotted or is out of square.

Glass upgrades add their own cost on top of frame material: double glazing is now standard in most climates, while triple glazing, low-emissivity coatings and gas fills between panes all add incremental cost in exchange for better insulation and noise reduction.

Be cautious with energy savings claims

Replacement windows are often marketed heavily on future energy savings, but the actual reduction in a heating or cooling bill depends on your climate, your existing windows' condition, how much glass area you have, and the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Treat any specific payback period quoted by a salesperson as a rough estimate rather than a guarantee, and ask for the window's documented performance ratings rather than relying on a verbal claim.

If you already have a per-window quote from an installer, enter it directly using the "Custom amount" option rather than the calculator's default price per frame type, since real quotes vary by brand, glazing option and local labor rates.

Planning a multi-window project

Replacing windows one room at a time is common when budgets are tight, but bundling several windows into a single project often reduces the per-window labor cost since the crew is already on site. Use our renovation budget calculator to sequence a whole-house window replacement across a few seasons if that suits your cash flow better than one large bill.

Rough opening sizes, structural headers and local energy codes vary by region, so have a qualified installer measure your actual openings and confirm code requirements before you order windows.

How it's calculated

Number of windows × a typical installed price per window for the chosen material, multiplied by an installation factor (full-frame replacement removes the old frame and costs more) and a regional factor.

Worked example

Eight mid-range windows with insert installation in an average area: 8 × $700 = $5,600. Full-frame would be about 8 × $980 = $7,840.

Frequently asked questions

+What is the difference between insert and full-frame replacement?

An insert fits inside the existing frame and is quicker and cheaper. Full-frame removes everything down to the studs, which fixes rot and air leaks but costs more.

+Are new windows worth it for energy savings?

They improve comfort and reduce drafts, but savings vary widely by climate and the windows you replace. Treat energy savings as a bonus, not the main payback.

+How long does window replacement take?

An experienced crew typically installs 8–12 insert windows in a day. Full-frame takes longer and may need interior trim work.

+Do large or custom windows cost more?

Yes. Bay, bow and oversized windows can cost several times a standard double-hung window.

+Can I enter my own window price?

Yes. Choose "Custom amount" and enter the installed price per window from your quote.
