Bathroom Remodel Costs: What to Expect

RenoPlanMaker · 4 min read

A bathroom remodel budget needs to cover the work behind the finished surfaces as well as the fixtures you can see. Start by distinguishing a simple replacement from a layout change or full rebuild. Then price plumbing, electrical work, waterproofing, tiling and installation against one consistent brief—not just a shopping list of attractive taps.

A refresh is not the same as a rebuild

Replacing a vanity in the same position can be a limited job, provided the surrounding surfaces and connections are sound. Removing a bath, creating a shower or relocating a toilet may affect drainage, floors and adjacent walls. Record which existing parts stay and which must be removed before asking for prices.

Identify practical constraints early. Is this the only bathroom? Can materials reach it without dismantling furniture or using specialist lifting? Are the walls suitable for the fittings? A small room does not remove the need for trade visits or preparation, so floor area alone cannot describe the full job.

Budget for preparation, not just fittings

A tile price rarely includes making a damaged substrate suitable for tiling. Ask for separate information on removal, repair, leveling, installation and disposal. Concealed water damage cannot be priced precisely until it is investigated; agree how discoveries will be documented and quoted before extra work proceeds.

Check the ventilation plan, access to shutoff valves and the suitability of existing services with your contractor. Local permit and licensing rules vary. Treat plumbing and electrical changes as work to be assessed by appropriately qualified professionals rather than assuming a fixture can simply be swapped.

Tile is the finish; waterproofing is a system

Schluter explains that tile and grout are not waterproof. A shower needs a suitable assembly beneath the finish to manage moisture. Buying a more expensive tile does not replace that assembly or compensate for poor detailing around corners, penetrations and drains.

Ask which waterproofing system is specified, which components are compatible and which checks are needed before tiling. Follow the manufacturer’s installation and curing requirements and any local inspection obligations. Keep specifications and photographs of completed stages. This guide is a budgeting aid, not instructions for building a waterproof shower.

Worked example: a bathroom planning estimate

For a hypothetical 50 sq ft bathroom at $275 per sq ft with an average-area multiplier, the calculator gives 50 × $275 × 1.0 = $13,750. These inputs illustrate the formula, not verified prices for your town. A room in metres uses the corresponding per-m² input instead.

The tool allocates around 40% to labor ($5,500), 25% to fixtures and vanity ($3,438 after rounding), 15% to tile and flooring ($2,063), and 10% to plumbing and electrical ($1,375). These approximate categories total 90%, so they are not an exhaustive itemized quote. Do not add them on top of the main estimate.

Choose products before asking for a fixed price

Fixtures that look similar can need different installation work. Confirm dimensions, mounting requirements, valve compatibility and availability. A wall-hung unit may need support; a larger shower screen may affect access or the enclosure. Share the specific model information with whoever is doing the work.

Ask for a written list of included products or clearly defined allowances. If a quote assumes one tile size but you later choose a complex pattern, revisit the installation price before ordering. Use the tile calculator for quantity, but let the installer check the layout and pack order.

Keep contingency separate and compare complete quotes

Test a separate reserve in the renovation budget calculator. An illustrative 15% on $13,750 adds $2,062.50, giving $15,812.50 before any separately excluded fees. The bathroom tool does not automatically add this reserve; check whether your contractor’s price already includes any allowances for uncertain work.

Compare like-for-like scope, inspection responsibilities, payment stages and cleanup. The FTC’s contractor guidance is a useful starting point for checking credentials and written agreements in the US; use your own consumer-protection authority for local requirements. Metric mode does not change the calculator’s dollar currency, so obtain local prices rather than relying on presets overseas.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a small bathroom still be expensive?

Many tasks, including plumbing connections and waterproofing details, are required regardless of floor area. A small footprint alone does not make the scope simple.

Should I keep the existing plumbing layout?

It can avoid relocation work, but the existing installation still needs checking. Compare a same-layout quote with a changed-layout quote before deciding.

Does the bathroom calculator price shower waterproofing separately?

No. It produces an all-in area-based estimate with approximate allocations. Ask for waterproofing specifications and costs in your actual itemized quote.
